In a 16-minute interview broadcast Monday, Ms. Rice also quoted Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as saying there is no connection between the al-Qaida terrorists in Afghanistan and the Palestinian cause. On the subject of U.S. policy in the Middle East, Ms. Rice said Washington continues to consider a possible meeting between President Bush and Mr. Arafat. She repeated President Bush's vision of a future independent Palestinian state that respects the security of Israel. Concerning possible sponsors of international terrorism, Ms. Rice said Washington is watching Iraq closely and that it worries about Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction. She added the Bush administration is having discussions with Syria's government, strongly suggesting, "that Syria get out of the business of sponsoring terrorism." Asked about her perception of Al-Jazeera, Ms. Rice said that if she did not respect the Qatar-based television, she would not be doing the interview. The Bush administration has criticized the influential Arabic news television station for broadcasting statements by suspected terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaida network. However, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is due to give an interview to Al-Jazeera later Tuesday amid efforts to explain U.S. policies and the anti-terrorism campaign to the Arab world. ------------------ http://all.net/ Your use of Yahoo!
