Chanting "Jihad! Jihad!" (holy war! holy war!), the protesters clad in traditional Muslim white and wearing matching prayer caps or veils gathered near the centre of Solo, about 450 km (280 miles) east of Jakarta. But despite fears of anti-Western violence, the demonstrators dispersed peacefully early in the afternoon after listening to sermons by local clerics. Solo, an ancient Javanese city famous for its royal palace, has been one of the hotbeds of anti-U.S. sentiment in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation. Scores of Muslim radicals raided hotels and the local airport last month searching for Americans to expel. Sunday's turnout was much smaller than the 10,000 Muslims who thronged the streets of Jakarta on Friday in the biggest American protest to date against the U.S.-led strikes on Afghanistan in retaliation for the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington that killed more than 5,000 people. Indonesia has been racked by almost daily anti-American protests since the U.S.-led strikes against Afghanistan began on October 7. The anti-Western sentiment has depressed financial markets, but Indonesian Islam is generally moderate and there have been no reports of serious trouble involving foreigners. President Megawati Sukarnoputri is trying to tread a fine line between supporting the United States, a key ally, in its war on terrorism and appeasing domestic Islamic anger over the attacks on Afghanistan. 04:17 10-21-01 ------------------------ Yahoo!
