''It is beyond doubt that the helicopter was fired on by the Taliban and 20-25 soldiers were killed in its crash,'' the Pakistan-based news agency reported Taliban spokesman Amir Khan Muttaqi as saying. The Taliban report conflicts with a Pentagon report Saturday that said two U.S. military personnel were killed in a helicopter accident in Pakistan. The Pakistan Foreign Office also confirmed the crash was an accident. Muttaqi said five helicopters took part in the operations in the mountains in the Arghandab district of Kandahar on Friday with up to 20-25 soldiers aboard each helicopter. U.S. ground troops fled when the Taliban reached the area, according to Muttaqi, but one of them was hit by Taliban forces and fled to Pakistan territory with great difficulty where it then crashed. Muttaqi wondered why news of the crash was made public several hours after the announcement that U.S. ground troops had launched successful ground operations inside Afghanistan. ''We will never surrender before the United States. God willing we will defeat the oppressive force,'' he was quoted as saying. AP-NY-10-21-01 0711EDT ------------------------ Yahoo!
