Coca-Cola Site in India Bombed in a Protest Over Afghanistan

  By CELIA W. DUGGER

  [N]EW DELHI, Oct. 21 — A banned, far-left rebel group bombed a Coca-
Cola plant in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh today. Its members
left behind a note in the local Telugu language saying the attack was to
protest the American bombing of Afghanistan and threatening more such
actions.

The early morning attack heavily damaged the plant, but did not kill
or injure anyone. A dozen or so members of the rebel group, the
People's War Group, rode up to the plant by jeep and motorcycle and
locked the night security guards in a room before entering the factory,
according to a statement from Coca-Cola.

The bombing is likely to be a setback to efforts by the state's chief
minister, Chandrababu Naidu, to attract foreign investment to Andhra
Pradesh, whose capital, Hyderabad, has become a center for India's high-
technology business.

The People's War Group had earlier issued a news release denouncing
what it described as American terrorism and imperialism in Afghanistan
and holding the United States responsible for capitalism in the world,
J. Puranachandra Rao, the superintendent of police in Guntur district,
said in a telephone interview tonight.

The People's War Group, which says that it is fighting to help poor
peasants, has been making violent guerrilla attacks on the state
government for years.

In its statement, Coca-Cola said it had called on the government to
protect its plants and offices. It noted that all its 5,500 employees
are Indian and that its operations "are all Indianized."

Irfan Khan, vice president for Coca-Cola India's corporate affairs,
said the company had repeatedly been subjected to extortionate demands
and threatened with attacks. "In the past, we never succumbed to these
pressures," he said, but added, "We are worried about the security and
safety of our staff and plants."
