[Mundine said America had it coming to them on Sept 11]

Mundine title fight in jeopardy
Oct 23 09:13

Anthony Mundine was not welcome in the United States and his
upcoming title fight in Germany was in jeopardy, an angry International
Boxing Federation (IBF) executive said on Tuesday.

Joe Dwyer, the IBF's ratings chairman, said Mundine's comments that
America had brought the terrorist attacks on itself had shocked his
boxing organisation.

Mundine's words hit a raw nerve with Dwyer, whose son was almost
killed in the September 11 attack on New York's World Trade Centre.

"Anthony Mundine is certainly entitled to his political beliefs but I would
say he certainly wouldn't be welcome in the United States," Dwyer told
AAP on Tuesday.

The Muslim former rugby league star turned boxer said yesterday he
opposed Australia's involvement in Afghanistan, but last night
apologised for earlier comments that the United States had brought the
September 11 attacks on itself.

He last night condemned the September 11 attacks and there was "no
way" the victims had brought it on themselves, adding: "I want to
apologise to the people that caught them statements but now you heard
me clarify myself tonight."

However, the word from the IBF's New Jersey headquarters today was
that Mundine's tongue could force German promoters to cancel his
December 1 IBF title fight in Dortmund with super-middleweight
champion Sven Ottke.

The fight would easily be the biggest of Mundine's short boxing career.

"I don't know that he is welcome in Germany either," Dwyer said.

"That fight might not even happen.

"That's what I'm hearing from Germany. I hear they are up in arms about
it and I can understand that."

When asked if he believed Mundine might never be allowed to fight in
the US, Dwyer replied: "Well, I don't know who would be looking to bring
him over here."

"It certainly would (cost him large prize money).

"But they are the statements he has made."

Dwyer, as the IBF's ratings chairman, was the executive responsible for
elevating Mundine into the IBF's top 15 fighters.

Mundine's improved rating meant he was eligible to challenge Ottke.

"We had the fight approved because he is in our ratings and he is our
Pan-Pacific champion so there was no reason for us to not approve the
fight with Ottke but I don't know how the promoters are going to view
the comments," Dwyer said.

"They could pull the pin on it. It is an optional defence so they don't
have to give Mundine the fight."

Dwyer's son worked in one of the World Trade Centre towers. When the
first terrorist-controlled plane struck, his son was downstairs having a
cigarette and had to run for his life.

Dwyer said although Mundine's comments struck him personally, he
and the IBF would maintain a professional approach to the controversial
Australian fighter.

"It certainly hurts to hear something like that but I can't let that influence
my decisions," Dwyer said.

"We are going to have to go by his merits as a fighter. We can't really
draw lines on people by ethnicity or anything else."

"I think we just have to treat him based on his performance in the ring."

Dwyer said he did not believe the IBF would contact Mundine.

"I think at this stage we aren't going to touch it," Dwyer said.

"We are going to let things fall as they may."
