In a statement issued Friday, auDA said it "moved swiftly to protect [the] security of the AUNIC database following reports of a breach of security ... the hosting agreement ha been terminated." NetRegistry, based in Broadway, Australia, won the contract to host .au domain names in May, after a call for tenders from auDA, which was recently granted authority over the TLD by the Internet Corp for Assigned Names and Numbers. auDA said the contract has been handed to Optus Ltd while the organization makes arrangements for backup and redundancy processes. Although auDA did not elaborate on the nature of the security problems, its statement implied that the .au Whois database had been accessed by an unauthorized person or persons. The Australian Whois is not publicly available for bulk access, to protect against spammers and other malfeasants who get names and addresses of domain name registrants in order to carpet-bomb them with "offers". It is not known whether any data was stolen or altered during the security breach. Neither auDA nor NetRegistry was available for comment at press time. auDA said that, under legal advice, it will not give out any more information until its investigation is concluded. © 2001 ComputerWire. ------------------------ Yahoo!
