Despite being in constant communication with him and having had all their queries answered, the special branch and MI5 still saw fit to raid Mr Sirri’s house at 7:00am this morning, in the presence of his wife and children. The Muslim community is not unfamiliar with such tactics and intimidation from the constabulary. On the one hand the British government have stressed that they are making ‘efforts to track down and arrest suspected activists linked to the al-Qaeda network’, however in reality this has become a cover in the past month to arrest and intimidate over 1000 Muslims and Islamic activists in what is obviously a witch hunt intended to put fear into the hearts of an already tense Muslim community. For those of us who know Mr Sirri, we can testify that he has been living in Britain as a political refugee. Mr Sirri’s English is poor, he spends most of his time defending human rights abuses and he is in no way involved with any terrorist activities. There is therefore no justification whatsoever for him to be detained under the Terrorism Act 2000. We therefore call upon Muslims to support their Muslim brother in this time of need. We call upon the British Government to release Mr Sirri immediately, to compensate him for his wrongful arrest and stop bullying Muslims here and abroad. Moreover we call upon all Muslims to be vigilant at this time and to put pressure on the authorities to release all those wrongfully held in custody and to demonstrate if they are not released forthwith.
