Hackers bypass Microsoft copy protection
Hackers in Hong Kong are routinely breaking
Microsoft's digital media copyright protection
system and helping themselves to broadband
encrypted content, including games, films and
music videos, according to a report in the
South China Morning Post today.

Pirated Copies Of Windows XP Pose Security Risk
Microsoft has confirmed that pirated copies
of its Windows XP operating system exist on
the Web, but warned users of the potentially
serious security risks they run if they
download and install the software. Microsoft's
warning comes in the wake of IT security firm
Bit-Arts' claims that cracked versions of the
commercial edition of WinXP started appearing
on the Net within hours of the new operating
system being put on sale last week.

Linux update withholds security info on DMCA terror
Citing a controversial U.S. copyright law, a top
Linux developer announced this week that Americans
would not be given details about the security fixes
in an update to the open source operating system,
a first for a software development community that
prides itself on transparency.

DOD envisions virtual Pentagon
In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks,
the Defense Department is developing plans for a
"virtual Pentagon" that would enable DOD officials
to continue to work even in the event of a large
scale attack on the Pentagon, senior military
information technology officials said. The plans,
which are referred to either as the "virtual
Pentagon" or the "distributed Pentagon," are
a significant redesign of DOD's IT contingency
plans, which were found to be inadequate as
a result of the crash.

Does Official Taliban Site Exist?
Afghanistan's Taliban government, which declared
the Internet unholy and banned its use for millions
of Afghan citizens last June, maintained a website
until shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks
and still has at least one e-mail address through
its embassy in Pakistan.

Hacking is not terrorism
The Americans are, it would seem, determined to
equate hackers with terrorists: new legal proposals
would make many system intrusions a terrorist act.
On the face of it this is a surprising thing - some
might say an overreaction. There is, though, a form
of logic behind it, but one I believe the rest of
us would be well advised to avoid.

Internet Watchdog Warns of Increased Cyber-Protests and Hacking
Cyber protests and Internet sabotage are likely to
increase as political dissenters become more attuned
to the potential of the Internet, according to the
National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC),
a key U.S. government agency monitoring potential
threats to communications,energy, finance, and
water systems. The prediction is included in a
report released in October 2001 entitled "Cyber
Protests: The Threat to the U.S. Information
Infrastructure."

Cyberprivacy: The FTC's double-edged sword
In a marked departure from his predecessor's
policy, Federal Trade Commission Chairman
Timothy J. Muris announced on October 4 that
the FTC would emphasize enforcing existing
laws over seeking passage of new legislation.
Muris also called for a marked increase in
funding for enforcement of existing privacy
laws.

Five thoughts about cyberterrorism
Is your organization prepared to handle a
cyberattack? Will you know where to go if you
are not? Stephen T. Barish, manager of security
technology solutions at Ernst and Young, offers
advice on how to make your network security
airtight. What measures should a corporation
take to prevent a cyberattack?

Why Are There No Rich Hackers?
Analysts say many hackers do get paid, but
usually for legitimate work, such as penetration
testing for corporate clients. People make ideas
happen. Smart people who innovate, working with
smart people who execute. People who get it.
People who get it done. To get vital information

Police divided on mini-computers
Some use hand-held gizmos to access office from
field; others skeptical of benefits. Picking
through the spot-lit rubble of the World Trade
Center, Menlo Park fire Capt. Harold Schapelhouman
pulled out a hand-held computer and beamed
technical notes to his search crew, scattered
throughout the site. Then, during a break, he
used his Palm VII to e-mail his wife a quick
``I miss you.''
