The House Energy and Commerce Committee's Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee will hear from security officials at Microsoft Corp., Oracle Corp., EDS and a handful of other major industry players when it convenes a hearing on cybersecurity Thursday. Subcommittee Chairman Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., wants to "examine the efforts of private industry to address these security issues," a committee aide said today. The aide, who asked to remain anonymous, said that the industry leaders could face questions about their security precautions in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks and what role government should play in supporting private sector cybersecurity efforts. Although government cybersecurity officials have been some of the most visible players in the electronic security debate, security experts have long argued that the private sector will have to take a lead role in safeguarding the nation's critical electronic infrastructure. Deigned a likely target for any physical or cyber attack, the nation's "critical infrastructure," includes everything from roads and bridges to telecommunications networks and power grids. Security experts point out that the vast majority of that infrastructure -- both physical and electronic -- is privately controlled and operated. The committee aide said that Thursday's meeting was not targeted directly at critical infrastructure questions, but would address the important electronic assets provided and operated by the companies that have been called to testify. ------------------------ Yahoo!
