Sweet-talking worm overcomes defenses
Not all Internet worms contain misspellings and
sex references. In fact, Goker (w32.goker.a@mm)
is even a little poetic. Unfortunately, this
worm will attempt to contact everyone in your
Microsoft Outlook address book, potentially
tying up e-mail servers with excess traffic.

Infamous hacker group helps the FBI
The controversy, rumours and speculation
surrounding the FBI's Magic Lantern tool
has attracted ridicule from the internet
underground. Not only has one virus writer
constructed a piece of malware under the
same name, but now infamous hacker group
the Cult of the Dead Cow (cDc) has offered
a helping hand to the Feds.

CIO Council spreads out security
The CIO Council has not de-emphasized

-- which eliminated the security subcommittee
-- but it has made the issue a focal point
across its committees and has created teams

homeland security, Jim Flyzik, the council's
vice chairman, said Dec. 12.

Oracle's 'unbreakable' toy story
Oracle Corp. executives have likened the 9i
database and application server products to
children's Tonka toys, claiming they are
unbreakable when used in the "right environment."
But is this campaign an invitation for hacking
attempts, marketing hype or a statement of fact?

Device keeps passwords from going to the dogs
Only a few mathematically inclined folks can
remember long strings of random numbers and
letters, let alone several of them. Yet the
best security practices call for changing

for every network device.

Workers now get chance to snoop on bosses
As civil rights advocates express concerns
about managers snooping on their workers'
online activities, a labor union in Australia
has hit on the idea of letting workers find
out more about what their bosses are up to.
The New South Wales Labor Council launched
Wednesday a Web site called Bosswatch, which
tracks links between apparently separate
companies and executives.
