Anti-virus firm Sophos is advising customers of an e-mail hoax targeting
the Cambridgeshire Police Force. Many users have received an e-mail
claiming that £400 has been debited from their credit card for the purchase
of an Apple iPod, and gives a "customer service" number if they have any
questions. The telephone number given, however, is that of the
Cambridgeshire Police Force general enquiries line, resulting in a flood of
phone calls to that line. It is unclear whether the hoax is meant as a
simple prank or as a serious attempt to degrade police service. Police are
investigating the matter.
