Just as it is critical to understand the law in order to be a good collector, a debtor who knows the law can exploit it if you make a mistake. It is always good to assume that the debtor knows the law as well as you do, and be very careful to follow the laws to the letter. This is one of the best reasons to use the built-in letters and scripts and to be careful about altering them.
